Wellbeing advice

The recent aftershocks have been frightening for everyone and will result in a range of reactions including for some, further disruption and changes.

Supporting school staff

To provide support for school staff, we recently surveyed teachers to ask them about their wellbeing needs. This has helped us develop more information and resources.

We are working on a plan to deliver the Incredible Years Teacher Programme in Christchurch. We’ll add information soon.

Wellbeing seminars

The Ministry will offer seminars in Christchurch so teachers can access relevant information to support their wellbeing and to support families, children and young people.

These seminars will be delivered directly to schools on request. To request a seminar, please contact Fiona Bartley at fiona.bartley@minedu.govt.nz.

Remember there is a confidential counselling service available for school staff through the Employee Assistance Programme, phone 0800 327 669.

Supporting managers

The Ministry will continue to work with the Canterbury Primary Principals’ Association and the Canterbury and West Coast Secondary Principals’ Association to provide support to Christchurch principals.

Supporting children and young people

Your recent feedback indicated that teachers need information and resources to support children.

We intend to train up to 100 staff to deliver the Triple P Primary Care programme. This programme has been shown to give families and teachers skills to support children’s behaviour and play.

We will also increase the number of schools in Christchurch that can access the Positive Behaviour 4 Learning School Wide Programme to support children’s learning and behaviour.
