Consultation background
The Ministry has developed an intensive wraparound special education service for students with complex behaviour, social and education needs as well as those with complex needs associated with intellectual impairment. The introduction of the new service will impact on the future role of residential special schools. Earlier in 2012 the Ministry sought feedback on what the role of the schools should be. Consultation closed on Friday 15 June 2012.

Note: Salisbury school applied for a judicial review of the process relating to the Minister’s decision to close the school. The reserved judgement by the High Court has raised issues that the Minister will need to reconsider and so Salisbury school will stay open in 2013. Read the Minister’s media release
Intensive Wraparound Service
The Intensive Wraparound Service (IWS) is a regional service run by the Ministry of Education. It is based on the successful Intensive Behaviour Service (IBS) which was introduced by the Ministry in 2010.
