Information and communication technology – Network for Learning

To support delivery of its wider policy of accelerating the roll-out of ultra-fast broadband to New Zealanders, the Government intends to enable schools to connect to ultra-fast broadband within six years.

The essential infrastructure will be provided through rolling out fibre to schools as part of its national fibre roll-out. Further components include school internal network upgrades, fibre drops (the section of fibre between the road and the school building) and potentially a managed ICT network for schools.

This initiative provides funding of $3.57 million over 4 years on top of the $3.8 million invested in 2010/11 to support ultra-fast broadband in schools, including development work for a potential dedicated ICT network for schools, the “Network for Learning”.
