Children with special education needs

National Standards have been developed for all children in years 1-8, including those with special education needs. However, children with very significant learning disabilities will also continue to be supported through an individual education programme or plan.

For children with special education needs, the focus of the standards will be as much on each child’s progress, as well as their achievement, in relation to the standards.

From 2010, National Standards’ goals in reading, writing and maths will be included in the individual education programme process.

Children with very significant learning disabilities

A very small number of children have very significant learning disabilities. These children are likely to learn long-term within level 1 of the New Zealand Curriculum, and will receive support through the Ongoing and Reviewable Resourcing Schemes or through Supplementary Learning Support.

The progress these children make will be assessed against the standards as part of the regular learning review that takes place through their individual education programme or plan. These plans are agreed in consultation with parents, families and whānau, teachers and the Ministry.
