If your child is an English language learner
If your child is learning English as an additional language, the teacher will report your child’s progress and achievement in relation to the Reading, Writing and Mathematics National Standards.
To inform you of your child’s progress in learning English as an additional language, the school may also decide to report using the English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP). The Progressions describe reading, writing, speaking and listening expectations for children who are new learners of English. They also help your child’s teacher to provide an appropriate teaching and learning programme to help your child learn English.
Ministry guidelines for reporting progress and achievement
Here are Ministry guidelines for reporting to parents and students on progress and achievement in reading and writing. These guidelines are specific to English language learners who are not yet meeting the expectations of the National Standards.
For years 1 - 4 students
Students working within Foundation Stage and Stage 1 of ELLP should be tracked and monitored. Their progress should be reported to parents and students using the ELLP as well as the National Standards.
For years 5 - 8 students
Students working within Foundation Stage, Stage 1, or Stage 2 of ELLP should be tracked and monitored. Their progress should be reported to parents and students using the ELLP as well as the National Standards.
Mathematics standards – for years 1-8
Schools will use the mathematics standards to report on English language learners’ maths progress and achievement.
Maths is taught in the English language and, to a great extent, children need to show their maths knowledge and understanding mostly through language. Teachers will consider this when judging children’s progress and achievement.
