A provider guide to National Student Number records

The allocation of National Student Numbers (NSNs) to school students in ENROL is now complete and the National Student Index is performing well.  Many providers are now in the process of updating school students’ details with more information.  Tertiary providers, for example, are able to add information to ENROL that is improving the quality of our data.

Some issues have arisen with data being changed when it should not. In some of the more extreme cases a student’s NSN details have been completely overwritten with someone else’s details.  One student’s name was completely changed, and overnight he aged from 5 years old to 48.

Where data has been over-written in error the process for rolling-back records has proven complicated and time-consuming.  A number of providers have asked us what can be done to make sure that updates are as accurate as possible.

As a rule information such as birth dates should never be changed if a record is listed as being created by ENROL.  If you think birth or name data needs to be changed for a record created by ENROL please contact the Sector Service Desk (ph 0800 422 599).

We have developed a guide to help anyone when they update NSN records.  It offers suggestions that will give you confidence that you’ve got your student data right.  If you have comments on the guide or other suggestions on what we can do we’d appreciate your feedback.
