Appointment:
All members are appointed by the Minister. The Minister appoints one member to be the Chair. In appointing members, the Minister must have regard to the principle that the Board should have sufficient and appropriate resources of skill and knowledge to enable its functions to be performed competently.

Term:
Three years, with reappointment possible

Qualities sought in Board members

Generic - some or all of the following:

  • Sufficient life experience to be able to contribute constructively to quality decision making.
  • Networks of contacts which would allow insights from a range of interested parties.
  • Time, energy and commitment: is not already heavily involved elsewhere to an extent that could reduce effectiveness.
  • Has a degree of objectivity, impartiality and independence.
  • Can work constructively in a team setting to achieve generally stated goals.
  • Is aware of and sensitive to ethnic, cultural and gender differences.

Specific - some or all of the following:

  • Has demonstrated excellence in any one or a combination of the following: secondary or tertiary education and training; strategic management; business development; business management.
  • Has an understanding of and an empathy with young people who are preparing to enter the workforce and/or with people of all ages undergoing career changes.

Board Meetings

Board meetings are held once a month. There is no Board meeting in December.

Most Board meetings are held at Career Services' National Office in Wellington. However, two Board meetings each year are held at Career Centre offices - these are 1.5 - 2 days in duration. A two-day meeting occurs in October - 1.5 days for the annual strategic planning session, 0.5 days for the Board meeting.

Generally, Board meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month and take half a day, 10.30 am - 3.30 pm.

Sub-Committees

The Board has two sub-committees. The Finance & Risk Committee meets monthly (January excepted). These meetings are held at Career Services' National Office in Wellington and last 1 - 2 hours. They are generally held on the third Friday of each month at 9.30am.

The second sub-committee oversees the Chief Executive's appointment, remuneration, and performance. This meets on an as required basis at least two times per year.

Attendance Fees and Cost Recoveries

  • The remuneration for board members is an annual rate of $12,000;
  • The remuneration for the deputy chair is an annual rate of $15,000;
  • The remuneration for the Chair is a daily rate of $800, limited to a maximum of $29,900 per annum.

Travel expenses, reasonable costs and motor vehicle mileage are reimbursed.
