Supplementary Learning Support

Support for children and young people with significant - and ongoing - special education needs.

About Our Support

Supplementary Learning Support provides an individual student with access to a new specialist teacher - a learning support teacher - as well as some additional one-on-one specialist support.

Learning support teachers are employed by schools. They help classroom teachers adapt the way they teach and develop teaching programmes and resources to assist individual students.

One-on-one specialist support is provided by the Ministry of Education's special education staff.

The initiative involves resource teachers: learning and behaviour, learning support teachers, Ministry specialists and classroom teachers working closely together to provide more coordinated support to children and young people with special education needs.
