Springboards to Practice

The Springboards to Practice were developed as part of the Enhancing Effective Practice in Special Education project. The Springboards weave research information together with student, parent and teacher voices into practical teaching suggestions.

The Enhancing Effective Practice in Special Education project was part of a wider Ministry of Education initiative to support and develop teaching and learning for all students. We are increasingly conscious of the need for evidence-based practice. In an educational context, we consider evidence comes from three sources:

1. from professional practitioners;

2. from families and young people about their lived experience;

3. from research (both national and international).

From a literature review undertaken for the Enhancing Effective Practice in Special Education project, powerful messages from all three sources have been captured as Springboards to Practice under seven themes:

  • Belonging
  • Learning
  • Social
  • Teaching
  • Self-Identity
  • Friendship
  • Bullying

The Springboards weave research information together with student, parent and teacher voices into practical teaching suggestions. By using the suggested activities in their own teaching contexts, and recording their findings, teachers will help to build knowledge of what works for students in New Zealand schools.

The Springboards to Practice are available for download at the bottom of this page in PDF format. Both black and white and colour versions are provided.
