Informed consent is an integral aspect of service provision and is basic to the individual's freedom, rights and self-determination. It is also an ethical and legal requirement under the codes of ethics of various professional bodies, the Health and Disability Act (1994), and Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights (1996). The GSE Informed Consent Guidelines are about informed consent under the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights.
