Individual Education Programme (IEP) Guidelines

These guidelines are for schools, parents and specialists who support students with special education needs. They are intended to assist with planning for any special education students, whatever their need.

Key Points

  • The New Zealand Curriculum Framework and statements apply to all students.
  • Planning the learning experiences of students with special education needs is part of the wider classroom planning routines.
  • Planning, teaching and learning is a team activity.
  • Team work is founded on respect for the opinions and choices of all members - parents, student, teacher and other specialists.
  • The first step in effective planning is to identify and prioritise learning outcomes.
  • Learning by students with special education needs will occur within the overall class programme.
  • When teaching students with special education needs, fully utilise regular teaching strategies before considering alternative approaches.
  • Student progress and success occur when there are effective partnerships between individuals, families, schools and other specialists.
  • The years at school are the foundation for life in the wider community.

"The way to achieve success is first to have a definite, clear practical ideal - a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends - wisdom, money, materials and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end."

- Aristotle
