Individual Education Programme (IEP) Guidelines
These guidelines are for schools, parents and specialists who support students with special education needs. They are intended to assist with planning for any special education students, whatever their need.
Implementing the Programme
Careful planning, programme development and allocation of responsibilities will be a waste of time and resources if equal attention is not given to implementation of the programme. All too often IEP documents languish in student files until the next IEP meeting is imminent.
Details of the teaching and learning strategies, adaptations of materials, use of support personnel and appropriate mechanisms for monitoring will be determined by those responsible for the implementation of the programme. This will occur soon after the IEP planning meeting and the decisions will then be recorded onto the IEP plan.
Additional detailed notes may well be provided to guide the day-to-day delivery of the programme. These will include any recording requirements, such as checklists and structured observations. Schools will be able to include much of this monitoring in their approach and format for class-wide programme evaluation.
Before the next IEP, the implementation team will consult to review the monitored effects of the programme and decide if any further assessments are required. The key worker is responsible for co-ordinating these processes.
