Individual Education Programme (IEP) Guidelines

These guidelines are for schools, parents and specialists who support students with special education needs. They are intended to assist with planning for any special education students, whatever their need.

Appendix 1 - Responsibilities of Schools

Schools have very clear legal requirements to provide effective programming for students with special teaching needs. National Education Goals state that teachers, principals and boards of trustees must work to achieve success in learning for those with special needs by ensuring they are identified and receive appropriate support.

National Administration Guidelines

These outline how boards of trustees can support learning and assist schools to achieve the National Education Goals. In practice, boards work with principals, senior management and staff to meet the guideline requirements.

Schools must be able to show they have developed policies and procedures to facilitate:

  • the establishment of an inclusive environment
  • identification of learning needs and barriers to learning
  • implementation of strategies to meet these needs
  • assessment of progress and achievement.

Refer to the Flow Chart to Assist School-Wide Planning which can be used to establish policies and procedures to help schools meet their obligations under the National Administrative Guidelines.
