Bus Controller Allowances

A school’s bus controller plays a vital role in the provision of school transport. Bus controllers are the main point of contact within a school for transport for caregivers and are responsible for bus route administration and safety for their school.

  • Bus controllers may be eligible for an allowance under either the teachers' or principals' collective agreements. Contact your Education Payroll Service Centre if you wish to find out whether you are eligible for the bus controller's allowance.
  • Only one bus controller per route can be paid the allowance.
  • Where a bus route is servicing more than one school there should be a lead school responsible for the route - usually the school where the route commences from and returns to. The bus controller from this school will generally receive the allowance for the route.
  • To receive the allowance bus controllers need to submit a claim form to their regional school transport Service Agent each term (using the relevant form below).
  • Claim forms must be signed by the principal or Board of Trustees chair of a school and verified by the Service Agent before being forwarded to payroll.
  • Schools need to keep service agents updated on the names, routes and contact details of school bus controllers as they change (using the relevant form below).

Full details on the role of the bus controller can be found in the Bus Controller Training Workbook of the School Transport Toolkit. If you have any questions about the role of bus controllers, or the bus controller's allowance, please contact your local school transport Service Agent.
