Transport assistance funding rates 2011/12 - Māori-medium schools

From 1 July 2011, new transport rates will come into effect for all Māori-medium schools (MMS) established under sections 155 and 156 of the Education Act 1989.

In Budget 2011, it was announced that the funding rates for Māori-medium schools are to be updated annually to take into account cost inflation schools may face in order to transport students to and from school. The funding rates will be reviewed every year to make sure they are comparable to funding rates received by schools that are Directly Resourced for school transport.

The existing funding rates (GST-exclusive) are as follows:

Category Per-student rate ($)
Rural, Decile 1 to 4 4.0356
Rural, Decile 5 to 10 3.0044
Urban, Decile 1 to 4 2.9156
Urban, Decile 5 to 10 2.3556

The new funding rates (GST-exclusive) applicable from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012 are:

Category Per-student rate ($)
Rural, Decile 1 to 4 7.2564
Rural, Decile 5 to 10 5.4022
Urban, Decile 1 to 4 5.2425
Urban, Decile 5 to 10 4.2356

The funding formula remains the same, and is calculated as follows:

  • Daily funding = per-student rate x number of eligible students
  • Annual funding = daily funding x number of applicable school days
  • Quarterly funding = annual funding ÷ 4 (plus 15% GST).
