Environmental best practice guidelines for schools

These environmental guidelines focus on activities that schools must comply with.

Each regional council produces regional plans in accordance with the Resource Management Act 1991. Each plan has rules regarding these activities, which schools are legally required to comply with.

Many of these activities are classified as "permitted" ie, they can take place without a resource consent as long as they comply with certain conditions. Other activities are more stringently managed and require resource consent.

The requirements in regional plans vary. For example, in the Wellington region, a daily discharge of less than 1,300L of sewage from septic tanks is permitted and does not require a resource consent. Discharges of more than 1300L do require a resource consent. 1,300L is about the amount of sewage from a large home.
