The Standard Specifications for Security Systems
The Ministry has Standard Specifications for security systems that must be used when installing systems in schools. A qualified security consultant must undertake the installation.
These requirements are mandatory to ensure that:
- schools around the country have a consistent level of security
- security systems are reliable and compatible with existing fire alarm systems
- systems can be expanded if schools grow or change.
The Standard Specifications Document
This document is in two parts:
Part 1 includes the proforma Conditions of Contract and schedules. You should provide the appropriate forms to tenderers, along with the "Site Specific Information" for the project, in hardcopy or electronic form to help them complete their tenders and, if successful, to complete the formal documentation required under the contract.
Part 2 includes the technical aspects of the Security Specification. This document identifies the options and refers you to the "Site Specific Information" from which you will be able to clarify the best option for your school.
You should give the Standard Specification, in its full form, to the security consultant. The consultant may already have a copy, and you will just need to check that they are working off the most recent version.
Note that the consultant's tender response must confirm that the Specifications have been read and understood by them.
The Site Specific Information
The "Site Specific Information for the Supply and Installation of a Security System" is to be developed by the security consultant to meet the specific needs of your project. Areas of the document that are to be customised are:
Where to go for further help
If you have trouble understanding the Standard Specifications, help should be sought from the security consultant engaged for the project. They should be able to use the Specifications based on their previous experience with similar documentation for school security projects.
