Children with Special Needs
1. The Ministry's Design Standards, Section 2, requires new and remodeled facilities to comply with the building Act, NZS 4121 Access 2001 and the disabled Community Welfare Act. It also requires lifts to be installed in two storey buildings. There are no guidelines such as designing for mainstreaming or special schools.
2. The DES has guidelines for special education, Building Bulletin 77: Designing for pupil with Special Education Needs. Updated in 1996, building Bulletin 94'. Inclusive school design: accommodating pupils with special education needs and disabilities in mainstream schools is also helpful. In addition other DES bulletins such as lighting and acoustics have sections on special education needs.
