Capacity Methodology

Calculations and methodology provided for schools to determine the approximate capacity for their schools property.

Capacity Methodology

I. Primary Schools

  • If #TS <= 7 then capacity = #TS x 25
  • If #TS > 7 then capacity = (#TS + 0.8) x 26

NB: If a Tech centre is attached then subtract tech TS from #TS (max of, 2 TS or OS/120 rounded up to next whole number of TS).

II. Intermediate Schools ("0.8 rule" applies)

  • If #TS <=18 then capacity = (#TS + 0.8) x 19.5
  • If #TS > 18 then capacity = (#TS - 3.2) x 24.9

NB: If O/S tech students then subtract [(O/S tech roll)/120] x 0.6 from #TS.

III. Secondary Schools ("0.8 rule" applies)

  • If #TS <=16 then capacity = (#TS + .8) x .88Z (see Appendix 3 and below for Z which is obtained from attached chart)
  • If #TS > 16 then capacity = (#TS - 1.2) x Z

NB: If O/S tech students then subtract (O/S tech roll)/120 from #TS.

IV. Kura (yrs 1 to 8 only)

  • Capacity = (#TS + 0.8) x 20

V. Composite Schools

  • If it is anticipated at capacity the secondary (yrs 9 to 13 roll will be less than 200 then capacity = (#TS + .8) x M1 (see Appendix 4 and below for Z which is obtained from attached chart)

Where M1 = 1/{[(Rp/Rt) x 1/26] + [(Ri/Rt) x 1/19.5] + [(Rs/Rt) x 1/.88Z]}

  • If it is anticipated at capacity the secondary (yrs 9 to 13 roll will be greater than 200 then capacity = (#TS - 1.2) x M2 (see Appendix 4 and below for Z which is obtained from attached chart)

Where M2 = 1/{[(Rp/Rt) x 1/26] + [(Ri/Rt) x 1/19.5] + [(Rs/Rt) x 1/Z]}

NB: If O/S tech students then subtract [(O/S tech roll)/120] x 0.6 from #TS.

Rp = current Primary roll (yrs 1 to 6)

Ri = current Intermediate roll (yrs 7 + 8)

Rs = current Secondary roll (yrs 9 to 13)

Rt = current Total roll

"Z" the secondary year level multiplier

For example, for a school with a secondary (yrs 9 to 13) of 77, Z = 11; for 255, Z = 155 etc.
Z - the secondary year level multiplier
