Under a new initiative from the Ministry of Health (MOH), District Health Boards (DHBs) have been reviewing the provision of oral health care in their districts.
This includes looking at the best ways to use school dental clinics. It is anticipated that:
- some school dental clinics will be kept and refurbished as community oral health clinics
- some new community clinics will be built on school sites
- some existing clinics will be decommissioned
- there is likely to be an increased number of mobile units which will need new pads at some schools.
DHBs have prepared Business Cases proposing the changes for their districts. These Business Cases have been presented to the MOH for approval.
This resource outlines the process for boards of trustees (boards) to follow when DHBs begin implementing their Business Cases.
This could affect some schools immediately, as individual Business Cases are approved.
This resource contains the following:
- Info sheets covering each stage of
- the process
- downloadable process flowcharts
- frequently asked questions
- downloads for the standard agreements.

Please see the download at the bottom of this page for a flowchart which gives an overview of the various options for school dental clinics and the process under each option.
