Schools Planning and Reporting
The school planning and reporting documents inform your community about the management and governance of your school. By consulting with, and reporting to the community, the board of trustees will help people become more informed about the priorities for learning that will be the focus for improving student outcomes at your school in the years to come.
Schools planning and reporting
From 2004 the boards of trustees of all state and state-integrated schools must develop a strategic and annual plan. The development of the plan and the monitoring of progress against annual targets is the responsibility of your board of trustees. This is the core role of the board.
The strategic and annual plans are documented in an annually updated charter, and progress against the plans is reported to your community in the Analysis of Variance report, which is part of your school's annual report. Both the charter and annual report documents should be available from your school.
Your school's charter should be prepared in consultation with your community. The community should know about the plans and targets for improving student outcomes. Your local Maori community should be consulted about the plans and targets for improving the achievement of Maori students.
The strategic plan establishes the board of trustees' priorities and objectives for the next three to five years for intended student outcomes and management of your school's resources. The strategic plan should identify the most urgent learning needs for the student group as a whole and sub-groups of students who are at risk of not achieving.
In addition, your board should also document objectives related to the special character of the school. The charter should include policies and practices that reflect New Zealand's cultural diversity, including steps taken to provide instruction in tikanga Maori (culture) and te reo Maori (language) for students whose parents ask for it.
The annual plan should describe the annual targets relating to intended student outcomes, and use of your school's resources for the relevant year.
In your school's annual report, the board must report to your community on the achievement of students as a whole group and of student groups who are at risk of not achieving. The achievement targets are set out in your school's annual plan.
