Education Kaikōura

Learn more about Education Kaikōura, a community-led process developed by the Ministry of Education.

Education Kaikōura - Planning for the Future is a community led process developed by the Ministry of Education. It involves the community working with an independent facilitator to develop a vision for education and, later in the process, a plan for implementing a strategy to achieve this vision. The process is being directed by the Education Kaikoura Working Group. The Ministry of Education is part of this process through representation on this group.

This is a new process in New Zealand, and perhaps in the world, where the affected people determine how to make best use of the education resources provided by central government and their own resources. In this way education can become integrated with overall community development. While the Minister of Education may accept or reject the community's recommendations, it is guaranteed that the voice of the community will be heard and that Government will engage in meaningful dialogue on what should be done.

For this project, the Kaikōura community stretches from the Woodbank area around the Clarence River in the north, to the Lynton Downs area in the south. The project includes all aspects of education, from pre-school to adult education, and all elements of education, both formal and informal.
