Safe Travel for Students with Special Education School Transport Assistance
'Safe Travel for Students in Receipt of Special Education School Transport Assistance - A Good Practice Guide' is a document published by the Ministry of Education. It provides advice and guidance for schools, caregivers and other school transport stakeholders on identifying and supporting a student's home to school travel needs.
The Ministry of Education provides Special Education School Transport Assistance (SESTA) for eligible students. For more information on how transport assistance is provided for students with special needs, go to the ministry's school transport web page, www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/schooltransport.
In some cases, we will contract special education school transport service providers to transport these students to and from school by taxi, minibus or total mobility vehicle. In these instances, the ministry is committed to ensuring that the journey is a safe one. As such, this good practice guide provides advice on issues that should be taken into account when thinking about safe travel.
Whilst the guide has primarily been developed for students in receipt of Special Education School Transport Assistance (SESTA), it may also be useful for those students with disabilities travelling to and from school by private car.
The Good Practice Guide is supported by a number of appendices providing additional information such as legal considerations, fact sheets on specific safe travel equipment, sample checklists & forms as well as relevant literature and references.
