Medical Retirement

This page provides information and application forms for the Medical Retirement-Serious Illness provisions that are available for employees covered by the Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement or the Area School Teachers' Collective Agreement.

1. The Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement provides for medical retirement on grounds of serious illness. See clause 3.12 and Appendix B of the collective agreement.

2. The Area School Teachers' Collective Agreement also provides for medical retirement on grounds of serious illness. See clause 2.9 and Appendix 6 of the collective agreement.

3. Concurrence to medically retire must be sought from the Secretary for Education.

4. Concurrence will only be granted where the medical evidence from a registered medical specialist clearly supports the medical retirement application.

5. Grounds must exist to support that the teachers cannot now and in the foreseeable future continue to perform their role.

6. Only medical retirement-serious illness enables the employer to initiate medical retirement on the grounds of serious illness.

7. There is an optional Employee Assistance Programme process that supports an employee where an employer seeks to medically retire the employee.

8. Secondary and area school principals have medical retirement provisions.

9. Collective Agreements, variations and guidelines are available on the Ministry of Education website under the heading Schools Governance, Management and Administration.
