TESSOL - Tuition fees scholarships - Making an application

These scholarships to study towards a Teaching English in Schools for Speakers of Other Languages (TESSOL) qualification are offered by the Ministry of Education to teachers of new migrant, Pasifika and international students in state funded primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Overview

TESSOL-trained teachers in mainstream classrooms or as specialists in primary and secondary schools provide critical support for English language learners by developing and strengthening their English oral language, literacy and learning skills. Teachers with appropriate experience and TESSOL qualifications can improve the quality of delivery and the outcomes for these students.

About the scholarship

The Ministry of Education is providing an opportunity for New Zealand registered teachers who have at least two years' experience, and are permanently employed in a school, to gain these qualifications. Mainstream/curriculum primary and secondary teachers are especially encouraged to apply, as well as those currently teaching in specialist ESOL classes.

Scholarships are offered towards a TESSOL qualification through the following providers:

  • University of Auckland Faculty of Education for teachers from Auckland primary and secondary schools
  • University of Canterbury College of Education for teachers from Christchurch primary and secondary schools
  • Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) for teachers from Waikato primary and secondary schools
  • Victoria University for teachers from Wellington primary and secondary schools, and
  • Massey University for teachers in primary and secondary schools in rural areas and provincial cities.

Principals may nominate more than one teacher in their school. If two teachers from a school are studying towards a TESSOL qualification, they can support one another and make a positive difference both in the classroom and school-wide.

Please note that all applications must be directed through the principal.

The scholarship provides funding for a total of three to five papers, depending on the course. This includes the cost of course fees for each paper and approximately $100 towards books. The funding period for study is usually over two years (i.e. at a rate of one paper per semester). The Ministry will monitor the effectiveness of this initiative in terms of its impact on teacher development through the feedback evaluation forms completed by the teacher after each paper.

All state and state integrated schools with ESOL funded or International fee-paying students will be sent application packs at the beginning of Term 4, 2009 with applications being accepted after October 12, 2009. The Selection Committee will meet in November 2009 to consider all applications for study in 2010. You can also download the application pack below.

The closing date for all applications is 30 October 2009.
