Secondary Principals' Sabbatical Leave

Each year there are 50 paid positions, each of one term based on 10 weeks duration, available to principals in state or state integrated secondary schools, covered by the Secondary Principals' Collective Agreement (SPCA).

Purpose

The purpose of the secondary principals' sabbatical leave scheme is to provide, during their career as a principal, a sustained period of time away from their school for professional learning activites, reflection and rejuvenation.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for sabbatical award, you must have:

  • at least five years' service as a secondary or area principal in a state or state integrated school at the time of taking the sabbatical
  • the support of the board of trustees, including any agreed costs.

Konica Minolta Dame Jean Herbison NZEALS Scholarship

One scholarship of $4,500 is available to cover economy air travel, accommodation and any course fees for the programme organised. The scholar will be responsible for other costs of subsistence, additional travel, medical insurance, etc.

The Ministry of Education will fund the employment of a relief teacher for up to four weeks provided the scholarship is awarded to a staff member of a state or state integrated primary school, intermediate school, area school or secondary school and subject to the granting of leave with pay to the scholar by the board of trustees.

Purpose

To allow an education administrator to undertake study and/or a programme of visits to schools or other education-related institutions in New Zealand or overseas.

When to apply

Applications for the Konica Minolta Dame Jean Herbison scholarship open 1 August and close on 30 September annually. The winner will be announced approximately one month after the closing date and the award will be presented at the bi-annual New Zealand Educational Administration and Leadership Society (NZEALS) Conference.
