Identity Data Extract

Using network directories to control access to web-based applications

Most schools use data from their SMS to populate their network directories, which in turn are used to control access to the school's computer networks and associated resources.

Schools are now able to use those same network directories to control access to web-based applications (e.g. Google Apps, Moodle, Mahara etc) as well.

One of the building blocks to this system is to ensure that the directory is always up-to-date and that updating it is as painless as possible for the school. To this end we have developed an SMS Identity Data Export (IDE) specification which ensures the export coming from the SMS looks exactly the same for every school, regardless of which SMS is used. The Identity Data Export function also allows schools to update their directories daily and thus ensure they are as up-to-date as possible.

Please talk with your SMS vendor to find out more about the Identity Data Export, or see the data sharing table to check whether your SMS vendor supports this.
