Stages One and Two

Stages One and Two of the School Network Upgrade Project were completed at the end of 2008. A further $34m funding for ICT infrastructure upgrades was announced by the Minister of Education in February 2009 and more detailed information is expected to be available shortly.

The ministry part funded the upgrades in partnership with schools and undertook all the required design, tendering and installation processes.

In Stage One 333 schools, mostly rural and very small were upgraded. These schools were assessed as having no networks or poorly performing ones. All the schools had less than 190 pupils and were upgraded during the 2005-2006 period. In Stage Two 90 schools were upgraded. These schools were larger with up to 240 pupils and were spread across both rural and urban areas; they were upgraded during the 2007-2008 period.
