Secondary and area school groundstaff

Most staff working as groundstaff in state and state-integrated secondary and area schools will be covered by:

  • the Secondary and Area School Groundstaff Collective Agreement, or
  • an Individual Employment Agreement (IEA), with terms and conditions similar to the Secondary and Area School Groundstaff Collective Agreement.

You’re covered by the collective agreement if your work is covered by this agreement, and you’re a member of the Amalgamated Workers Union New Zealand Southern Incorporated, the Northern Amalgamated Workers Union Inc., or Central Amalgamated Workers Union Inc., the unions that negotiate this agreement with the Ministry.

You need to sign an individual employment agreement if your work is covered by this agreement but you are not a member of the Amalgamated Workers Union New Zealand Southern Incorporated, Northern Amalgamated Workers Union Inc., or Central Amalgamated Workers Union Inc. Your IEA will be Ministry promulgated, which means the Ministry of Education develops and approves the IEA. The terms and conditions of your work are similar to the collective agreement.

To confirm your work is covered by this agreement you can read the coverage text from the Secondary and Area School Groundstaff Collective Agreement, Part 1, 1.2
