The second Hui Taumata Matauranga: Māori Education Summit was convened in Turangi and Taupo 9-11 November 2001 at the invitation of Tumu Te Heuheu of Ngati Tuwharetoa.

3 The Deliberations: Analysis of Recommendations

The 107 recommendations made at the Hui Taumata Mätauranga in February, were forwarded by Tumu te Heuheu for the consideration of the Minister and Associate-Minister of Education. In turn, they were analysed and grouped into five clusters:

  • Töku Pä Harakeke -Töku Pä Kurakura: The Family - the Education Cornerstone
  • Töku Reo Mäori -Öku Tikanga Mäori: Mäori Language and Custom
  • Tahia te Ara ki te Ao Marama - Educating for What?
  • Öku Rangi Whakamataara - Striving for Quality in Education
  • Kia Toitü Töku Mana Mäori, Töku Ngäkau Ngätahi: Mäori Participation With Authority and Partnership

After considering the recommendations it was then possible to divide them into three schedules:

  • those that accorded with existing Government policies and could therefore be addressed within existing frameworks - Schedule 1
  • those that required further discussion between Mäori and Government - Schedule 2
  • those that were primarily for further Mäori discussion - Schedule 3
