Hui Taumata Matauranga September 2004
The fourth Hui Taumata Matauranga was called by Ngati Tuwharetoa in Taupo on September 3-5, 2004. The theme for the fourth Hui was broadly focused on young people/rangatahi. Like the previous three, the aim of the Hui was to hold a forum for discussion on Maori education issues by Maori.
Hui Taumata Matauranga
September 2004
The fourth Hui saw Tumu Te Heuheu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa Paramount Chief, call for education solutions that addressed current issues for rangatahi while encouraging discussion on the future for Māori education and the preparation needed for what that might bring.
Key issues raised at the fourth Hui Taumata Mātauranga included:
- supporting young people to know who they are and what they want to be;
- realising that everyone has a role to play in creating good education opportunities for young people;
- celebrating our academic successes as much as our sporting achievements;
- changing attitudes and mindsets about young people and what they can achieve;
- accepting that there are many ways to achieve educational success, and that there is no one right way; and
- listening to young people as the world they face today is different to what it was when we were young.
