Private board
Information on private board accommodation.
In a private board situation, you have your own room in a private residential home or boarding house.
Meals are provided for you, and mealtimes are usually shared with other boarders. As with homestay accommodation, you will be expected to care for your own room; however, you may or may not be required to help with household chores. As a boarder you are free to come and go as you please.
If you are a student aged under 18, the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (Section 17.4) requires your homestay or boarding house to be approved by your education provider.
For students aged 18 and over this only applies to homestays and boarding houses which the education provider has arranged.
In a homestay situation, for example, the family home will be inspected by the agency or person who has arranged your accommodation. This is to ensure that the accommodation and family is appropriate for your needs.
If you are over 18 years of age and have arranged for private board independently, you alone will be responsible for deciding whether or not the accommodation and living situation meets with your requirements.
