Stand-downs, suspensions, exclusions and expulsions
The management of student behaviour is usually handled by teachers, senior staff or the school principal at the time of occurrence. However, the most serious incidents are sometimes addressed by either a formal stand-down or a suspension.
To help ensure correct processes are followed, the Ministry has published guidelines for boards of trustees. Every school should have a copy of this booklet. The Ministry has also produced an information leaflet for the families of stood-down or suspended students.
More information is available in the Stand-downs, suspensions, exclusions and expulsions guidelines.
