The Ministry of Education can provide advice and support to schools to manage risk to students or to the operation of the school. Potential problems at a school may be signalled by the principal or board, the Education Review Office (ERO) or sector groups. If your board is concerned about a developing issue it is important to seek help at an early stage.
If, however there is serious risk to the operation of the school, or to the welfare or educational performance of its students, the board may request or the Ministry may recommend a statutory intervention.
A statutory intervention under Part 7A of the Education Act 1989 provides a range of six interventions that can be applied at a governance level. They can influence issues at a management level through application of board policy, direction to board employees, and performance management. The intervention framework allows a prompt, flexible and appropriate response to the varying needs of schools.
