Performance management

Performance management systems for principals and teachers have been mandatory in all state and integrated schools since 1997.

The purpose of performance management is to develop and utilise staff skills, knowledge, training and talent in ways that maximise learning outcomes for students.

With effective performance management, the board of trustees can have confidence that all staff are meeting the educational needs of their students and the goals of their school.

Similarly, effective performance management ensures that:

  • the principal and individual teachers know what is expected of them
  • support is available to them to meet those expectations
  • their performance will be monitored and assessed
  • their skills can be further developed.

Boards of trustees are directly involved in the performance management of their principals.

New professional standards

New professional standards for secondary school principals are now available. These are in addition to the professional standards for primary principals made available early in 2009. The Ministry of Education, NZSTA and experienced appraisal practitioners, including Associate Professor Eileen Piggot-Irvine, Murray Fletcher and Tim White, have developed and agreed on a framework to guide boards in effective practice when managing their responsibility for their principal's appraisal.
