Operational funding and staffing

This page provides information about the operational funding and staffing resources available to boards of trustees of state and state integrated schools.

Operational funding

Operational funding is provided to boards of trustees of state and state integrated schools for operating costs incurred by schools. This does not include funding for major property costs, school transport, and the salaries of teachers employed as part of the school's staffing entitlement, as these resources are provided separately.

The amount paid depends on the school's roll, the year levels of the students, the decile and the property profile.

Payments are made regularly, in advance, throughout the year.

If you have any enquiries regarding operational funding contact the Ministry’s helpdesk on 04 463 8383.

Staffing

Teacher staffing is one of the ways that the Government ensures the delivery of the curriculum to students.

Entitlement staffing is formula driven and is derived from year level rolls. Its provision enables boards to make decisions about providing for its students’ curriculum and pastoral care needs.

The banking staffing policy provides boards with flexibility to manage the use of their annual staffing entitlements.

The board’s role is to:

  • ensure that resources are budgeted to address the schools priorities as determined in their Charter document
  • ensure that the schools operational funding and staffing is managed in such a way that the school can successfully meet its obligations.

Detailed information about operational funding and staffing is available in the Ministry's Funding, Staffing and Allowances Handbook online.

Funding and staffing calculator

These calculators enable schools to estimate the funding they may receive from the Ministry of Education.

Schools can enter their estimated roll data into the calculators and receive an indicative funding and/or staffing estimation based on their profile and resourcing data and roll data entered.
