Roll returns are used to calculate your school's funding and staffing entitlement, for the Ministry's planning, national and international statistical reporting purposes, and policy decision-making. Hence they must be accurate.
The board’s role is to make sure that the roll is recorded accurately and that the correct information is provided to the Ministry.
In line with the statutory requirements set out in the Education Act 1989, every school must provide the Ministry with the details of its roll as at 1 March and 1 July each year.
You can find out more about what details are required from your school in the Roll Return Guidelines on the Ministry's Education Counts website.
The roll return must be tabled and noted in the minutes at the first BOT meeting following submission of the roll return to the Ministry. It must be signed off by your school principal and returned to the Ministry's National Office within 10 days of the two roll count dates.
