Emergency management planning

Boards of trustees are responsible for the safety of all students while they are at school or involved in off-site school activities. Boards need to ensure safety procedures are in place, including emergency response procedures.

Emergency preparedness should cover the types of emergencies that could occur in their area for example fire, flood, earthquake, chemical spill, volcanic eruption or influenza pandemic threat.

The Ministry has worked with sector groups to provide resources for schools to help them prepare for an emergency event or pandemic.

Boards' responsibilities for emergency management planning are consistent with National Administration Guideline 5; Health and Safety in Employment legislation; the Health and Safety Code of Practice for State Primary, Composite and Secondary Schools; and current, accepted practice.
